To everyone who is having problems getting FairUse4WM, I have some unfortunate news. After trying a few things, I can no longer get it to work either. I think SP3 for XP may have updated WMP and that might be causing the problems, but there is no way to know for sure.

Since FairUse4WM is no longer being developed, there’s not much we can do but to move on to a different technique. I would suggest using TuneBite. It allows for ripping at a higher speed than 1x with their proprietary high speed driver. This makes ripping the DRM for a CD worth of music doable in about 10 minutes.

I don’t really like this solution as it requires you to transcode the songs from one format (WMA) to another (MP3, AAC, etc…), thus resulting in a loss in quality from the original lossy source.

Obviously most people can find TuneBite w/o too much problem (*cough* piratebay *cough*), but for people who can’t, http://tunebite.com/en/remove_drm/index.html

i get the same error as andrew, rolled back to WMP10 and DL’ed FU4WM but when i press recover keys button it brings up a send error report box every time

hey,
when i try to use FairUse, i press the ‘recover keys’ button, and press the ‘start’ button. but, every time i do that, the ‘send error report’ box shows up.
please help!!

i’ve done the fairuse thing and all the ruckus songs are saying that they’re noDMR.. but when i open windows media player, most of the songs are still showing up as protected.. and when i try to convert to itunes. even the ones that say they’re not protected in windows media aren’t converting into itunes.. help?..lol

hey , when i download the fairuse + commander thing, there is an error when i try to open the commander
it says the application failed to initialize properly and then it closes

hey
i’m having the same problem lonnie is having.
i fiddled some with it, and i think the problem is that he did not set the filepath to the FU he had just extracted. it’s automatically set to c:/fairuse4wm.exe. when i changed this, it fixed it.

MY problem, though, is that when i do set it, the same problem i had with fairuse in general pops up: i have no keys, and when it tries to load them, i cannot get them to work. it shuts down from some unspecified error.

i believe it has to do with rolling back to an older version of wmp, which i still haven’t been able to figure out yet.

too bad somebody doesn’t have a program that just does this all for you.

Lonnie, I would try to help you if I knew what file was missing. Maybe a log file or some more info would help? I haven’t run into this specific problem before.

When I click the “remove DRM” button on the fair use commander for a protected file I get an error that says “The system cannot find the file specified”. Could you help me out?

I really appreciated your information but I am truly
very frustrated with Internet Explorer and why it will not go to the site for upgrading components. I will keep trying but at this point I doubt it is going to let me.
