So, i was just sitting here, really trying hard to find something to do (that didn’t suck), and I started typing a really long section of commented code in to my VB app… Then I realized that essentially I was writing what I should write in my blog. so, here it is.

Anyways, I really wanted to post some stuff over the last month, but either have been too lazy (bad me…) or been forgetful. So I will make another update soon. I mean for gosh sakes, the stupid server that hosts this blog is in my basement, there’s no reason for me not to update it!

So, I guess this is my first post of 2007. The year so far has been a good one! I started my co-op position and its going quite well. The job can be fairly boring sometimes, however so far there have been quite a few challenges. I’m living with my cousin and his wife, and I am eternally grateful for them taking me in, room and board in the Cleveland area is way expensive! I usually am home on the weekends to see my family and catch up on the household chore-like things. It has been very cold lately, like single digits and below with the wind chill. Mark Nolan says “Arctic Air” from Canada has come down to visit… I don’t care much for Canada’s air.

I like to check in on my Linux box/Blog sometimes, I’m still surprised how well my site performs. I really hope over the next few years to learn more about PHP applications, and MySQL databases. Maybe I can write a WP Plugin or even help with development someday! My friend Ben is learning ASP .NET at work, and he is excited about that. We’re just a bunch of geeks!

I want to start my Photo365 project pretty soon, hopefully before 2008! I guess that will happen soon enough!

Ubuntu, such a foreign sounding word… but I could almost say, it is my most favorite word as of right now! Ubuntu Dapper Drake has transformed my AMD K6-2 400Mhz machine into a more powerful webserver than I could have ever thought possible! Using XAMPP and eAccelerator to serve the pages quite speedily. It’s still not comparable to the new Mac Pro with 16GB of Fully Buffered DRAM, but hey it works for me.

If you’ve never tried Ubuntu, or any other Linux distro, I encourage you to download a LiveCD. This allows you to boot the kernel right off the CD and see what it looks and runs like. If you like enough, you can install it right then and there.

I will have to say, jumping into Linux was a bit scary at first, but as I do more in it, it becomes more familiar and I welcome the change. Finally constant disk activity has disappeared and now there is memory to spare. I just hope the hard disk doesn’t fail…

Over the last week, I have been working pretty hard on this site to get it too look nice, and function easily. It has been a rocky road with WP Plugins, HTML, JS, PHP and server software.

I found a solution to my server crashes, WAMP5. This program is much better, in my opinion, than The Uniform Server. Not to mention, configuring WAMP is a whole lot easier.

Along with new server software, a photo gallery, and some AJAX have been added. Plus a host of other cool stuff. This is all thanks to all of the great devs that write WP Plugins! Thanks guys!

Now, I just have to get my template to pass XHTML Verification. I have a feeling this will take a while to do, but for now, the page seems to be functioning correctly in both Firefox and IE6.

The web…

We all know it, and use it almost everyday. But I never realized how much work actually goes into a site, let alone the amount of work it takes to get MySQL, PHP and web server talking to each other. So, for now I am using The Uniform Server to host. This is running on a AMD K6-2 400Mhz OC box with Win 2000 (Yuck!). But I suppose for now with lack of cash being the word of the day, and no desire to move to Linux just quite yet. The only bad part is Apache in the build of TUS keeps crashing it seems like every time it writes to the MySQL DB. But I hope I can find the problem, because the alternatives will be a lot of work to implement.

Speaking of the web, I found a neat little article on my favorite news site that has some screenies of Web 1.0. It makes me chuckle to see some of these corporate websites that look like a 5-year-old did them. The web has come so far. Remember to sign up for digg, and digg the articles you like. Digg is nothing w/o us!
